Discussion Post * Magic Slays by Ilona Andrews

I am a romance lover first and foremost, and boy does the Kate Daniels series feed my ever-loving soul. There’s no denying that Kate and Curran steam up the pages, but even aside from that, this book was action all over the place. The dynamics between the characters are stellar, and I know i say this every time, but the emotion here was even more intense in this installment. That this series is still keeping pace after five books is so exciting! Anyway – enough gushing from me – as always, this post is split between Birdie Bookworm’s Blog and mine.. Part one can be found here on Birdie’s blog, and the conclusion is here, on mine! I hope you enjoy the discussion!

Please keep in mind that as this is a discussion post, it will include spoilers for the series.

*Our discussion dates for this series have changed. Please scroll to the end of this post for new dates.

Book Blurb:

Plagued by a war between magic and technology, Atlanta has never been so deadly. Good thing Kate Daniels is on the job.

Kate Daniels may have quit the Order of Merciful Aid, but she’s still knee-deep in paranormal problems. Or she would be if she could get someone to hire her. Starting her own business has been more challenging than she thought it would be—now that the Order is disparaging her good name. Plus, many potential clients are afraid of getting on the bad side of the Beast Lord, who just happens to be Kate’s mate.

So when Atlanta’s premier Master of the Dead calls to ask for help with a vampire on the loose, Kate leaps at the chance of some paying work. But it turns out that this is not an isolated incident. Kate needs to get to the bottom of it—and fast, or the city and everyone dear to her might pay the ultimate price…

Angie Elle: Good gravy – Saiman and his fear of Curran and ‘putting things to a soundtrack’ had me roaring with hilarity. Of course I saw where Saiman was coming from, and I would have been scared, too, but what a hoot! But Curran is right – he makes a wonderful leading man.

Birdie Bookworm:  LOL! I actually remembered that scene because I loved it so much. I mean, I actually like Saiman so there was a part of me that felt bad for him. Just not enough to be angry with Curran.  love possessiveness in my book heroes, and Curran sure makes it extra hot.

Kate’s new connection to Julie is going to have some pretty big ramifications down the line, I think. It was pretty messed up, but I would have done the same thing, if I’d had the ability.

Angie Elle: Julie is such a blah character for me, and I know we disagree about this – but I just don’t feel like Kate’s relationship with her was ever fully fleshed out. It makes the ‘Julie-parts’ of this series so mediocre to me. Obviously I’m glad that Kate is loving enough to make that kind of sacrifice, but I still just don’t get the attachment. And that’s something that never changed for me throughout the series.

Birdie Bookworm: Oh, not for me. I loved that Kate saw herself in Julie, and feels that their histories are similar. I think that makes Kate feel sisterly to Julie. She wants to be for Julie what Greg was for her. I love the balance of that in Curran and Derek. I think Curran feels for Derek what Kate feels for Julie. Both of them see themselves in these two teenagers who have both lost so much. I totally get how that ties the four of them together. (Plus, I just love watching Julie grow as a character -from the moment Kate met her until Grey Wolf… which you haven’t read yet. :D)

Angie Elle: No, and I doubt I will. I don’t like Julie in this series, and I feel like it would be a waste of time for me to read Derek’s book where she is a major player. It also smarts that there’s a possibility (if they’re having books together,) that she is his mate. I love Derek so much, but I just can’t get past my loathing for Julie enough to read it. I can see how, if you do like her and feel like there was a good foundation there, she would be an appealing character. But for me, that bond was never established and I have a hard time buying Kate’s attachment.

Despite that, I continue to love this series and Kate’s devotion to those she loves. I love seeing her grow with Curran and earn the respect of the pact, and I am excited to read the next book and see what else I’ve forgotten that I love!

Quick note – for those of you aren’t aware, the release date for Magic Triumphs was recently pushed out to August 28th. I don’t know about you, but I breathed a sigh of relief at this announcement. Birdie Bookworm and I made the decision to re-read this series very last minute, so we committed to reading a Kate Daniels book every two weeks on top of our regular review schedules. This has allowed us to spread our discussion posts out to every three weeks, giving us a bit of time before the final books is released. This is good news for those of you who want to jump on the Kate Daniels bandwagon and be all caught up for Magic Triumphs. If you’re thinking about giving this series a go, I highly recommend it. The world building and pacing of the Kate Daniels series can’t be beat!

  1. I love the shenanigans between Saiman and Curran. Sadly, I’m not a Julie fan, either, but I did read the novella for Derek’s part.

Thanks for the great discussion, ladies!
