I’m so lucky to have Birdie Bookworm as my blogging buddy. When we realized the release of Magic Triumphs was coming right up, I proposed we revamp our discussion schedule and read this instead. She was instantly on board, and I am so glad! I could have done a re-read alone, but it wouldn’t have been nearly as fun or thought provoking. (Birdie doesn’t much care for Jim, in case you didn’t notice. LOL) She asks such interesting questions and makes me consider aspects of a story I wouldn’t have thought much about otherwise! You’ll have to forgive us a bit with this discussion; while it does focus on Magic Binds, our theories and hopes for the last installment really dominated the second half of this conversation. We have lots of them, and we would love to hear yours! As is the drill, this discussion is split between our two blogs. You will want to click here to read the first part on Birdie’s blog, but don’t forget to return to Books & Beauty Are My Bag to read the conclusion!
Please keep in mind that as this is a discussion post, it will include spoilers for the series.

Christopher made some very major changes in Magic Binds, from his physicality to his emotional well-being. How do you think his character will impact the battle with Roland? In particular, do you believe Christopher will get his vengeance?
Angie Elle: I love Christopher so much. He is like the gift that keeps on giving. I am not sure how it’s going to impact the battle with Roland, and I don’t know if he’ll get his vengeance. Do I want him to? Sure. But I want Kate and Curran to have it more. But either way – Kate or Christopher, Roland dying at the hands of someone he created would be a nice poetic justice. And I do want Roland to die.
Birdie Bookworm: I’m not sure I think that’s going to happen. I think the tie between his life and Kate’s may mean that he’s just contained. I guess we’ll see.
However, as much as I want Kate and Curran to have their ever after, I think I’d really like it if the person who finally strikes that final blow was Christopher. I keep thinking of the forced possession, the torture, the loss of his life for so long… it enrages me. I’d be happy if he was the one who finally took out Roland.
Angie Elle: Oh, yes, I would be OK with contained as well, like the djinn. But death is preferable. I’d like to see that link between their lives broken. And if I remember right, there was doubt as to how strong that link is now that so much time has passed.
Taking a tally of who has Kate’s blood, we now have Julie, Mitchell, the baby on the way and possibly Adora. Granted they also have Roland’s blood and his magic is old, but since Kate ‘sired’ them, I think they’d be more tied to her. Also, Julie and Mitchell are, essentially, under Kate’s command. What part do you think, if any, this will play in Magic Triumphs?
Birdie Bookworm: I think she not only gave them her blood, she ‘claimed’ them, using the mine power word, which she didn’t do to Adora. I actually forgot about Mitchell, and it never even crossed my mind that he may be a player in the final battle. I have a feeling that Julie will play a major part in the final battle. I kind of feel like there was some foreshadowing there when Erra was telling Kate that Julie was from a very powerful group of people. I think we’re gonna get a shocker there somehow.
Angie Elle: If I learned anything from Erra’s book, it’s that they all come back. I think Mitchell is going to be a player in this. As for Julie – I just really hope this book balances her lightly, because I’m so not a fan of her character. I think anyone tied to Kate’s blood is going to have a major part in the way this ends.
If Magic Rises proved anything, it’s that the Andrews are not averse to killing off beloved characters. As a reader of this series, who could we lose (aside from Kate and Curran) that would leave you most heartbroken?
Birdie Bookworm: Derek would hit me hard, for sure. (Especially because I have Derek/Julie hopes and dreams.) I think I’d be pretty upset about Ascanio, too. I kinda love him. Though I think the one, other than Kate or Curran, that would hit me the hardest would be Barabas. I really love Barabas. I think he’s my favorite of the side characters, which is probably why I want him to have a book to himself.
Angie Elle: Yeah, I’d be sad about Ascanio and Derek, too, especially since they’re together in my head. I LOVE their chemistry. But for me, it’s Christopher. He has endured so much at the hands of Roland that if he were to lose his life because of Roland, too, I would be devastated. I want Christopher to just be as OK as he can be.
Birdie Bookworm: I was going to say Barabas and Christopher, but I thought it was overkill. LOL Those would be my two picks, and I agree with you about all the reasons why Christopher deserves to be happy. I just have this knot in my stomach that he’s one we’re going to lose, probably because he means so much to us and to all the characters.
With only one book left, how do you hope this series ends? What’s the one thing in the ending that’s non-negotiable?
Angie Elle: I want what Kate and Curran want – I want them to just live peacefully (and by peacefully I mean in this magic filled world still having to fight evil,) like they would if Roland didn’t exist. I want them to just be together with Julie, the new baby, their neighborhood block, the Guild, and anyone else in their circle of friends. I just want simple and happy for them. It’s what Kate never thought she’d have, and I want that for her so badly.
Kate and Curran have to live, and I’m pretty sure they’re going to. If one of them dies, I will be devastated and it could potentially ruin the entire series for me. Yes – I’m that dramatic.
Birdie Bookworm: Um, that is not dramatic. If Kate and Curran don’t make it out together, WITH their son it’s a game changer. I’d be crushed. I want Kate to have her family, and her peaceful life. And I hope they can achieve it with as many of their people still alive as possible. That’s my fear. The casualties will be great, and their win won’t feel like relief.
Angie Elle: That’s true. But the name of this book is Magic Triumphs. And it better feel like that, dammit! LOL
Andrea & Raphael, Julie & Derek, and now Hugh all have novels dedicated to them. If you could pick just one character (or pairing) to get a book, who would it be?
Birdie Bookworm: OMG, I think you know who I’m going to say! I’ve wanted a Barabas and Christopher book ever since I first read Magic Binds! I love how their friendship/relationship started, with Christopher’s shattered mind. I find their burgeoning love fascinating. I’d… I don’t know, do something spectacular, if only they’d write that book!
Angie Elle: That’s my choice, too! LOL There is something so tender about Barabas; I love the way he is with Christopher, and I do want them to get their own happily ever after.
Birdie Bookworm: RIGHT! And I love how now that Christopher is back in his mind Barabas is seeing him in a new light, and it makes him nervous. I loved when he said he didn’t need to see Christopher in a suit. I’m totally crazy about them.
Julie was Kate’s herald in Magic Binds. In turn, Magic Binds heralds in Magic Triumphs. How do you think this book was as a lead in to the Kate Daniels finale?
Birdie Bookworm: I thought it was the perfect lead in. I started this series, the first time, only like 4-5 books in. I remember waiting for each installment, but Magic Binds had the best cliffhangers. Even just getting to read a pregnant Kate is brilliant. I’m so glad we reread, because Magic Binds just reminded me of how excited I am.
Angie Elle: Oh, I agree. I like that her pregnancy isn’t part of the epilogue. I like that, even already, we’re seeing Kate’s Mama Bear. I think this was the perfect lead in to Magic Triumphs!
