From a USA Today bestselling author comes a heartwarming holiday romance between the a small-town florist and the handsome chief of police. Includes a bonus novel by Miranda Liasson!

Last Christmas was tough for Halona Locklear and her seven-year-old son Theo, who hasn’t spoken a word since his father’s death. This year, Halona wants nothing more than to give him a good holiday and to hear his sweet voice again. Enrolling him in the Mentor Match program might help, but when Theo gets matched with Sweetwater Springs Chief of Police, Alex Baker, Halona realizes that the handsome hero might know secrets about her past that she is determined to keep buried.

Chief of Police, Alex Baker, re-opens his father’s hit-and-run cold case every December, hoping to finally solve it. This year, his plate is full with being a Mentor Match to a young seven-year-old boy as well. His biggest obstacle, however, is fighting his attraction to the boy’s mother, Halona. As Alex gets close to solving his father’s cold case, he learns that those closest to him may be in danger — including Halona. Alex has already lost one of the most important people in his life; he isn’t about to lose her too, even if it means walking away to keep her safe.

Snowfall on Cedar Trail is the third book in Annie Rains Sweetwater Springs series, but this is where I started, and I was able to follow the characters just fine. However, I did find this town and its people to be so charming that I want to go back and read the rest of the series. So if you like to read in order, I think you’d enjoy previous books. I’m certainly looking forward to diving into them.

Halona and Alex have been at odds for years, but their war is mostly a silent one. Alex is the chief of police in Sweetwater Springs, and he knows more about Halona’s previous marriage than she is comfortable with. Halona is the owner of a floral shop, and as their town is a small one, their paths cross often. But this year, they’re seeing even more of each other, as Alex is selected as a mentor for her son, Theo, in the town’s Mentor Match program. Theo has suffered trauma and is currently experiencing selective mutism, but his reaction to a male influence, especially one as positive as Alex’s is undeniable. Even Halona can’t help but start to rethink her stance about Alex. Alex has been harboring secret (or not-so-secret, to some) feelings for Halona for years, and mentoring Theo is giving him more access to this woman than he’s ever had. This story has some serious elements; domestic abuse comes into play as well as the unsolved mystery of Alex’s dad’s murder years prior that haunts him to this day, but even with all that, there was a sweetness and softness to this Christmas love story that I really appreciated. Halona and Alex both had a lot of emotions to deal with – separately and things they may have held against each other over the years. But I like that they weren’t resistant to doing that. It made their getting together feel very organic and unforced. I loved the pacing of this story as Halona and Alex warmed up to each other, and I loved the way Alex was with Theo and how it showed Halona another side to Alex. He really was such a good man with a huge heart, wanting the best for everyone in the town he felt responsible for. But at the end of the day, he was a lonely man, and Halona and Theo were just what he needed.

This was a great read to usher in the holiday season (I feel so ahead of the game this year!) and I can’t wait to read more from this author. If you like a charming, small town romance and holiday hubbub on top of that, you’ll love Snowfall on Cedar Trail!

  1. You’re right! This sounds adorable. I love the way she softened after seeing her son respond to Alex and that Alex has a crush on her.

  2. I love the sound of this! I think I’d fall for Alex too if he helped my kid deal with a difficult situation. And the mystery with Alex’s dad sounds intriguing. I’m off to look this one up. Wonderful review! 🙂
